Viewing from The Aurora Bayside Inn
The Inn is ideally situated for aurora viewing. Located away from the brighter lights of downtown Yellowknife, with Yellowknife Bay as our backyard, the northern lights are highly visible from the Inn property. The lights dancing in sky over the Inn and reflecting off the water, is a magical sight!
When to Visit to View the Northern Lights?
From mid-April to late July, the “midnight sun” takes hold and the northern lights are no longer visible. As soon as darkness returns to the sky at night, beginning in early August, the Aurora Borealis can again be visible at night, until the end of September (1st peak season). October can be cloudy, making visibility of the Lights difficult. The 2nd peak viewing season coincides with the darkness and cold of winter, from early November through to mid-April.
How to Best View the Aurora Borealis?
When the sky is clear and the northern lights are out, they can be viewed in all their colourful glory right from the Inn’s property! Watch the splendour of the aurora from your room’s porch or balcony or from the dock (looking out over Great Slave Lake and the wilderness beyond). Staying up late throughout the night increases your chances of viewing the lights and seeing as great a variety of the lights, as possible.
In addition, group and private aurora viewing tours are available from professional touring companies in Yellowknife.
