Conveniently close to downtown and only 12 minutes from the airport, we are located in the unique and eclectic neighbourhood of Old Town. Situated on a peninsula, surrounded by Great Slave Lake on three sides, Old Town has plenty to offer for those looking for art, water-recreation, food, shopping, culture and scenic lookouts. There is plenty to do and see right outside the front door of the Aurora Bayside Inn! Commercial fishing boats, artists, outdoor recreation/adventure providers, restaurants and the North's oldest and best known General Store (Weaver and Devore Trading Ltd., https://weaverdevore.ca/) are all within walking distance of the Inn. The stimulating elements of this old neighbourhood will add to your enjoyment of staying with us!
Old Town is the original Yellowknife settlement area - and home to still-standing cabins and shacks from the prospector days. Also, as a complement from the modern area, we enjoy an eclectic collection of house and commercial building designs. Close to our shores are house boaters - known for their rugged individualism and non-conformist lifestyles. The local Air Tindi float plane base is a 2 minute walk away - and viewing float planes in transit adds an interesting aspect to the neighbourhood ambience. You can watch the planes taking off and landing in both winter and summer. Old town is also known for its rugged, rocky terrain, exemplified by "the rock", a miniature mountain that provides an impressive panorama of the city.

In the summertime, we provide maximum potential exposure to the light and energy of the midnight sun with an expansive upper deck - open to all guests and a generously sized lower deck - for Northern Skies room guests. In addition, we offer a floating dock, where you can fish or relax in one of our Muskoka deck chairs, in the summer, In the winter, you can strap on your skis on the dock and head out on the lake ski trails. We have a great expanse of sky viewable from our guest lounge - great year round, but especially for fall and winter aurora tourists!
John St. Louis is the establishment's Innkeeper. John is an avid angler and has operated a fishing guide service in Victoria, BC. Having lived in Yellowknife since 2005, John now calls the North his home and enjoys making guests feel welcome and at home.
The Inn is ideally situated for aurora viewing. Located away from the brighter lights of downtown Yellowknife, with Yellowknife Bay as our backyard, the northern lights are highly visible from the Inn property. The lights dancing in sky over the Inn and reflecting off the water, is a magical sight!
From mid-April to late July, the "midnight sun" takes hold and the northern lights are no longer visible. As soon as darkness returns to the sky at night, beginning in early August, the Aurora Boarealis can again be visible at night, until the end of September (1st peak season). October can be cloudy, making visibility of the LIghts difficult. The 2nd peak viewing season coincides with the darkness and cold of winter, from early November through to mid-April.
When the sky is clear and the northern lights are out, they can be viewed in all their colourful glory right from the Inn's property! Take in the aurora from the Inn's balcony or through the bay windows of the guest lounge (looking out over Great Slave Lake and the wilderness beyond). Staying up late throughout the night increases your chances of viewing the lights and seeing as great a variety of the lights, as possible.
In addition, group and private aurora viewing tours are available from professional touring companies in Yellowknife.
